Did Utopia Hit the Wall?

Oktober 14, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Postponed

We just got the news that despite a big wave of support (17 000 people) a court ruled in favor of evicting the pilot project Agrocité / R-Urban to build of a temporary privat parking lot. We therefor unfortunately have to postpone the public event and the workshop with atelier d’architecture autogérée planned for the 14th and 15th of October.

We wish Doina and Constantin all the strength and solidarity they need. We are sure they will find a new way, a new place, and a lot of support and friends to continue the work.

AAA’s presentation in 2015 while a dramatic thunder storm was crossing Prinzessinnengärten

Last year, at the Nachbarschaftsakademie together with Doina and Constantin from Atelier d’Architecture Autogéré (AAA) in Paris we discussed the question of What to Do When Utopia Hits the Wall?. AAA’s project R-Urban in Colombes was and is still threatened by eviction. The municipality wants to build a temporary parking lot instead. More then 17000 supporters signed the petition #saveRURBAN!.

This time Doina and Constantin will expose the current situation and explain us their strategies and practices to overcome it.

The public conversation and the workshop taking place the following day is part of  „Locating and Figuring Care and Commons in the Rurban Realm“. This project of common grounds / Nachbarschaftsakademie is made possible by Perspektive, a German-French fund for contemporary art and architecture initiated by the Bureau des arts plastiques (Institut français Deutschland) and the French embassy. In May of 2016 we took part in the Workshop Resilience en réseau at the Université Civique R-Urban in Paris.

Doina Petrescou and Constantin Petcou from AAA (Paris)

The Studio for self-managed architecture (aaa) was founded by the architects Constantin Petcou and Doina Petrescu in 2001. It is a collective platform which conducts explorations, actions and research concerning urban mutations and cultural, social and political emerging practices in the contemporary city. In Colombes, a town in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, aaa initiated the project R-Urban, a bottom-up strategy that explores the possibilities of enhancing the capacity of urban resilience by introducing a network of resident-run facilities to create complementaries between key fields of activity (economy, housing, urban agriculture, culture). Currently R-Urban is campaigning to #saveRURBAN. The municipality is threatening to evict the worldwide recognized project to build a temporary parking lot.
