August 18, 2016 @ 4:00 pm - 10:00 pm

A group of Brazilian women is organizing a one day event of debates, video screenings and a photo exhibition in the Nachbarschaftsakademie about the struggles taking place in Rio de Janeiro against the violations of human rights and rights to the city in the context of the Olympic Games 2016. It is an open event to discuss this reality and to highlight the resistance. In Brazil around 100 different social movements built the network Rio 2016, Os Jogos da Exclusão (Rio 2016, the Exclusion Games). Background

The Olympic Games 2016 begin this week in Rio de Janeiro and around 100 social movements got integrated in the city to fight against the human rights‘ violations performed by the State together with powerful companies, land owners and corporations. Since 2008, when Brazil was elected to host the World Cup 2014, the city has been the scene of the intensification of the processes of gentrification and police violence in marginalized communities.

Along the last few years, after the city subsequent election, in 2009, to host the Olympic Games 2016, most Rio’s citizens have suffered from the uprising of those processes and the establishment of a segregated and militarized city. With the argument of this megaevent’s preparation, over-priced mobility and infrastructure works, policing and militarizing of favelas, communities‘ evictions and repression onto social movements have become the major actions of the Municipality, the State and the National Governments to the means of “the games‘ legacy”, in the name of the international institutions FIFA and IOC.

So this week comes out the Journey of Struggles (Jornada de Lutas, in Portuguese) in Rio, called by a network of social movements, the Exclusion Games (Jogos da Exclusão, in Portuguese). They organized diverse activities to take place in the city from the 1st of August, with further political constructions.

The event in Berlin has the objective of, in connection with the „Jogos da Exclusão“ social movements, highlighting these important political struggles, presenting expressions of the actions held during the Journey of Struggles and enhancing the speaking voices of the residents of „favelas“ and peripheral areas of Rio, who are the most affected and are fighting against the oppression intensified by the Olympics. The aim is to bring this debate to an international scope. The main addressed issues are: gentrification, militarization of favelas, racism, lack of media democratization, violence against women and LGBTTT, environmental conflicts, lack of mobility and criminalization of social movements. There will be a photo exibition, a round discussion with people from Brazil, Russia and Germany, and some self-managed activities.

You are all welcome to participate in this exchange!
